Sport at Westbrook Lane Primary School
Sport is an important part of the curriculum at Westbrook Lane. Each class has two sessions of P.E. each week except Year 4, which has one lesson in school and one session of swimming lessons at Kirkstall Leisure Centre
In addition to the lessons taught by the class teacher or P.E leader, we regularly have specialist coaches who come into school to teach a course of lessons such as tag rugby, basketball, multi skills, kwik cricket, dodgeball and athletics. At the end of the course, the children usually participate in a tournament with children from other local schools.
Each summer, we hold a sports day where children are in mixed teams from across their key stage. Our ethos is to help children develop the ability to support and encourage other people. Working in mixed age and mixed ability teams enables children to apply these qualities with confidence in a secure environment. We have been delighted year in and year out with the way children have helped those who may have been less confident than themselves and supported others in their team, regardless of ability. We have had many comments from helpers at this event about how well the children co-operated and exhibited team spirit.
We are members of the Airedale and Wharfedale Sports Association and the Leeds School Sports Association; we also have strong links with the Leeds North West Schools Partnership and many local community clubs to which we direct interested or talented pupils.
In addition to the regular P.E lessons, there are opportunities for children to engage in the following sports and physical activities during and after school:
- Years 3 and 4 boys' football
- Years 5 & 6 boys' football
- Girls' football for years 3, 4, 5, and 6
- Running for all children year 3 upwards.
- Street Dance (all ages)
- Dodgeball (all ages)
- Gymnastics (all ages)
We participate in the Leeds Football Association league and cups. We regularly play inter-school matches and tournaments for both boys and girls including the Moran Cup, Jim Child's Trophy, The Armitage Cup and the St. Bart's Cup. In recent years, we have won the Armitage Cup, the Data Cable Trophy and the St. Bart's Cup.
We participate in the Leeds Schools Athletics Association Cross County league and enter teams in the under 11 boys and under 11 girls races held on Saturdays throughout the season. In 2018, five of our children qualified to represent the school at the West Yorkshire Games.
For the last eleven years, we have entered the Key Steps Gymnastics Competition with notable success, having won the Leeds final on several occasions, thus representing Leeds at the West Yorkshire School Games where we have been Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal Winners. Teams are chosen from across Key stage 2 from those children attending after school provision. In 2018, both of our teams won the events meaning we have qualified to represent Leeds at the West Yorkshire Games in both the amateur and specialist events.
Physical Education - School Sports Premium
Since September 2013, all schools have been allocated a Sports Premium in their budget to promote Physical Education (PE), School Sport (SS) and Healthy Active Lifestyles (HAL).
At Westbrook, we already have a wide range of activities to engage children, both during and after school. We take part in a variety of inter and intra-school sports competitions, festivals and tournaments. Children compete in many local events and competitions as well as Leeds wide initiatives. Through opportunities such as these, children have progressed to represent Leeds in the West Yorkshire Games. We audit our provision and its impact throughout the year and new initiatives are added in order to meet our aims. These are:
- to develop competence to excel in a broad range of activities
- to ensure pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time
- to engage in competitive sports and activities
- to lead healthy, active lives
- to engage in opportunities to embed values such as fairness and respect
